Historical Tracks - The Foundation

For this particular Martin Campbell release we step back in time, to the late 1970's and early 1980's. From a historical point of view these track form the basis and are the foundation of Martin's on-going works. Jamaica was still recovering from some violent times when these recordings were made, hence the themes of the songs.

Here we feature some of Martin's early attempts at recording his own works. The use of primitive equipment and real instruments give the music a certain sound from a period just before Reggae music grew into its electronic form of today. But the feel and vibes of these early recordings are still evident in many of his up to date recordings. All featured tracks are previously unreleased.

With the exception of War and Plunder which was recorded for Bunny "Striker" Lee (previsouly unreleased - the track is on Arena Rhythm) all of the instruments were played by Martin and on tracks such as "Bad Propaganda" and "Never Get Away", the drums were recorded in his mother's garage! "Love Has Gone" was voiced on the same day as "Richman", at King Tubbys, JA.

"Richman" was previously released on 7 inch 45 (Channel One UK) and is featured as an additional bonus track on this compilation. "Stop Your Loving" was recorded later during the electronic period and was inspired by his sister in law's behaviour.

So there it stands, 12 pieces of Martin Campbell's Roots History, check the tracks and enjoy!

Exta special thanks and respect tp: Phillip Whittaker (Gadd 59 Studio) for all track restoration work.
